Glastonbury Camp Weekend
Sam and I arrived early Friday at our first camp at Glastonbury. What a great spot; green, grassy, firepits, and a little creek to cool off in after we’d set up camp. Thank goodness the temperature didn’t climb to the expected high predicted.
After lunch, we did the 2.2k loop walk up the hill, under the power lines, then back following the creek (another swim) to camp. It was very enjoyable.
Steve arrived after an eventful trip with the van, deciding it wasn’t going to follow behind !! With help from a couple of kind souls, they got it hooked back on with no major damage (very lucky man).
Kylie and Craig arrived to set up their “Taj mahal”, followed soon by Heather and Rod. We lit the fire and sat around after dinner yarning under a balmy sky.
On Saturday morning we headed off. Steve eventually found the entry to the track on Gary's property. Crossing the creek, we made our way under some very low branches, through fairly thick undergrowth and a short walk to the junction of Glastonbury Creek and the mighty Mary River.
After that, we got to a point opposite the camp site high up on an escarpment with a view of our camp. We navigated our way, with a few detours and precision turns at a couple of forks (left, right toss a coin) to the track through Kings Conservation Park and State forest.
A couple of us stopped at The Needful Store, I’m serious, and grabbed a bite for lunch. Great hamburgers.
Back at camp, another swim with Theo concerned about the whereabouts of snakes !! We all voted to watch the sunset from Eagles Nest lookout a short drive from camp. Alas, the weather gods prevented even the slightest ray of sunshine peeking through. Still, it was something different to while away an hour with good company, great views west and down the valley towards Kilkivan.
Next morning, two cars did a quick drive up a steep, stony and stunning Mount Widgee lookout road.
The end to another great weekend of drives, scenery and friendly banter with beautiful people. Great camp site also. We’ll Be Back.
Thanks to our trip leader Steve.
Cheers
Brad
